Getting started

First launch, permissions, and finding your music.

What is ShuffleIt?

ShuffleIt is an offline music player for music you already own on your phone or PC. It does not stream. There are no ads and no account required. The core idea is true shuffle: every song in your library plays once before any track repeats.

What audio formats are supported?

MP3, FLAC, M4A, WAV, and OGG from folders on your device or PC.

Why does Android ask for so many permissions?

On first launch ShuffleIt may ask for:

  • Music and audio access is required to find and play your files
  • Tag editing access (all files or the Music folder) is optional. You only need it if you want ShuffleIt to save tags, lyrics, or artwork into files
  • Battery optimization exception helps keep playback from being killed in the background
  • Notifications are for Now Playing controls on the lock screen and notification shade

If you deny music access, ShuffleIt cannot build a library. Open Android Settings for ShuffleIt, grant music/files access, then scan again.

How do I scan for music?

Use Scan for Music from Home or Settings when you add new files. The first scan can take a few minutes on a large library. Let it finish. Force closing in the middle of a scan can leave the library incomplete.

ShuffleIt says no music found. What now?

Copy audio files onto the phone (preferably the Music or Download folder on Internal storage), wait for the transfer to finish, grant music access, then tap Scan for Music. You can also use Add Folder if your collection lives in a custom directory.

Does ShuffleIt work offline?

Yes. Playback, shuffling, browsing, and playlists work offline. Optional tools like Auto Tag or artist info may use the internet only when you choose them.

Playback issues

When tracks appear in the library but will not play.

Songs show title and duration, but Play does nothing (no sound, no error)

This usually means ShuffleIt can see the metadata Android indexed, but cannot open that specific audio file. Common after copying MP3/WAV from a computer:

  • The file transfer did not finish (0 KB or truncated files)
  • The file is in an unusual folder Android indexes poorly
  • The MediaStore entry points at a path that no longer exists

Try this:

  1. Open the same file in Samsung Music, Files, or another player. If it fails there too, the file is the problem.
  2. Copy a track you know is good into Music or Download, and wait until the copy fully finishes.
  3. In ShuffleIt, run Scan for Music again.
  4. Library Repair refreshes library metadata. It cannot repair incomplete files on disk.

If one freshly copied song plays and older transfers do not, copy the bad files again rather than only rescanning.

Some songs play and others skip or stay silent

That pattern often means a mix of good and broken files, not a Pro subscription issue. Skip to the next track. If the next one plays, focus on copying the silent tracks again. WAV files from some rippers or incomplete USB transfers are frequent culprits.

I already ran Library Repair and Rescan. Why still broken?

Those tools fix library bookkeeping (ghost entries, tags, paths). They do not replace missing audio data. If the file on the phone is incomplete or corrupt, you need a clean copy from your computer or backup.

Playback starts then stops, or audio drops on Bluetooth

Update to the latest ShuffleIt from Google Play. Keep the phone unlocked for a minute after connecting to a car or headphones so Android finishes routing audio. Extra Bluetooth phone or hands free devices nearby can confuse the phone’s call audio profile. That is usually an Android Bluetooth quirk, not ShuffleIt turning features off.

Smart Shuffle

How the no repeat cycle works, and how to control it.

How is ShuffleIt’s shuffle different from random shuffle?

Random shuffle picks songs independently, so favorites can repeat early. ShuffleIt tracks what has already played in the current cycle and will not repeat a song until every eligible track has been heard once. Artist spacing helps avoid hearing the same artist back to back when possible.

What do Start Smart Shuffle and Reset Smart Shuffle do?

Start Smart Shuffle begins a shuffle cycle through your library (or the collection you are viewing). After a shuffle queue is active, the Home button becomes Reset Smart Shuffle so you can clear played history and start a fresh cycle.

What is Banish?

Banish removes a song from Smart Shuffle only. The track stays in your library and playlists, but ShuffleIt skips it during shuffle. Restore it anytime from Song Options.

What is Auto-Restart Shuffle?

When enabled in Settings, ShuffleIt automatically starts a new shuffle cycle after every song in the library has played once.

Smart Shuffle does nothing when I tap it

Check for a short message on screen. Common causes: no songs in the library yet, music permission denied, or playback still connecting after a fresh install. Scan for music, grant access in Android Settings if needed, wait a moment, and try again.

Why does shuffle survive closing the app?

That is intentional. The no repeat cycle is meant to continue across app restarts, playlist changes, and banished tracks so your whole library still gets heard.

Playlists & library browsing

Albums, selecting more than one track, ratings, and organization.

How do I add an album to a playlist?

Open the album. Tap the playlist + button next to Shuffle All, then choose an existing playlist or create a new one. That adds every track on the album.

Older builds without that button: long press any track, choose Select all, then Add to Playlist.

How do I add several songs at once?

Long press a track to enter selection mode, tap more tracks (or Select all), then use Add to Playlist, batch edit, rate, or delete from the selection toolbar.

Can I browse by folders, decades, or genres?

Yes. Library tabs cover Tracks, Artists, Albums, Genres, Years, Decades, Folders, and Playlists. Home also offers Quick Mixes and Smart Playlists based on ratings, recently added music, and more.

Star ratings disappear after I change them

Update to the latest app. Use Save All Ratings and the restore options in Settings when you want a backup under Documents/ShuffleIt. Writing tags into files also needs the optional tag editing permission.

Artist names with “&” got split (e.g. Brooks & Dunn)

Recent builds keep names containing & as a single artist/group. Rescan or refresh the library after updating if older splits remain.

Library tools

Cleanup features on Android (many are Pro).

What is Library Repair?

Library Repair checks for ghost entries and broken bookkeeping in ShuffleIt’s library index. It is free and useful after moving files. If a song will not play because the audio file itself is incomplete, repair alone will not fix it.

What Pro library tools are available?

Batch Auto Tag, Missing Album Art, Missing Artist Photos, Duplicate Finder, Normalize Metadata, and Replace Album Art. Use them when you want to clean tags and artwork; they may need network access for lookups.

Normalize Genres changed too many tags

Newer builds keep file writes conservative (exact synonyms and junk cleanup) so intentional subgenres are preserved. Display grouping in the app can still organize similar genre names without rewriting every file.

Large library scans feel slow

That is normal on big collections or older phones. Let whole library tools finish. Playback and Smart Shuffle stay the priority. Background tools can take longer.

Pro, pricing & privacy

What is free, what unlocks, and how purchases work.

Is ShuffleIt free? Is there a subscription?

No ads. No subscription. Android is free to download with core shuffle, browsing, play history, and Library Repair included. Optional ShuffleIt Pro is a one time unlock in the app. Windows is a separate one time purchase with features included.

What does ShuffleIt Pro unlock on Android?

Crossfade, 10 band EQ, Batch Auto Tag, Missing Album Art, Missing Artist Photos, Duplicate Finder, Normalize Metadata, Replace Album Art, Ringtone Cutter, and Playback Speed.

I paid for Pro but features are locked

Open Settings and use Restore Purchase while signed into the same Google account that bought Pro. Play Billing can take a moment after a reinstall or new phone.

Do you sell my data or require an account?

No ShuffleIt account. Your music stays on your device. Optional online lookups happen only when you use tools that need them. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Bluetooth, cars & Android Auto

Listening on headphones, speakers, and in the car.

Does ShuffleIt work with Bluetooth headphones and car stereos?

Yes. Track title, artist, and album are sent to compatible Bluetooth displays. Keep ShuffleIt updated for the latest Bluetooth stability improvements.

Album art on Android Auto

Browse rows and Now Playing artwork are supported on Android Auto and Desktop Head Unit when projection is connected. Plain Bluetooth A2DP covers can be limited by Android’s Bluetooth stack. That is different from Android Auto.

Crossfade, visualizer, and EQ on Bluetooth

Overlapping crossfade, the Now Playing visualizer, and system EQ are designed to stay available on speaker and Bluetooth. If something sounds wrong after an update, email support with your phone model, Android version, and ShuffleIt version.

Windows

Desktop app basics. See also the Windows page for install screenshots.

Is Windows the same shuffle engine?

Yes. It uses the same universal no repeat shuffle idea, built for PC music folders. Crossfade, EQ, lyrics, and library tools are included with the one time purchase.

SmartScreen blocked the installer

Common for independent software outside the Microsoft Store. See the notes on the Windows page, or email support if you are stuck.

Refunds on Windows purchases

ShuffleIt for Windows is a one time purchase with immediate access to the full installer, so refunds are not offered. Ask questions before you buy anytime at support@shuffleit.app.
